Acting Bedford Central School District Superintendent Joel Adelberg sent a letter to the community this week regarding the diagnosis of the Mount Kisco Elementary School staffer, highlighting the safety and welfare of students and staff.

"Our school and facilities remain safe for all students, staff and visitors," Adelberg said."We are working with the department to identify students and staff who were potentially exposed and who should be evaluated and tested.”

The Westchester County of Health said that the risk of exposure to tuberculosis is very low.

According to the New York State Department of Health, “Tuberculosis is a disease caused by a bacteria that usually affects the lungs, but other parts of the body can be affected.

“Tuberculosis is spread through the air when a person with untreated pulmonary TB disease coughs or sneezes. People who breathe TB bacteria into their lungs can become infected; close contact for a long period of time is usually necessary for TB to be spread. Tuberculosis can affect anyone, including people of any age, nationality or income level.”
